Systems engineering

Rust

Services, tools, and shared cores for the parts of a product that cannot be casual about failure or speed.

Rust is the right tool when a bug is expensive, a service stays up for a long time, or a workload is heavy enough that a garbage-collected runtime becomes the bottleneck. We use it for network services, import pipelines, CLIs, and the native half of a Tauri desktop app.

We do not rewrite a product in Rust for the sake of the language. A TypeScript application with one Rust worker is often the better system. The boundary between them is an explicit contract, not a hope that JSON will line up.

Rust

What the work covers

Network services

HTTP and background workers that stay predictable under load and fail in ways an operator can see.

CLIs and internal tools

Single-binary tools for imports, migrations, and operations that should run the same on a laptop and in CI.

WebAssembly

Parsers, codecs, and compute moved into the browser when a round trip to a server would make the product feel broken.

Desktop cores

The Rust side of a Tauri app: files, processes, and system APIs the web view should not touch directly.

Data pipelines

Importers and transforms that have to be idempotent, because the same file will arrive twice.

Hot-path replacement

A measured slice of an existing system rewritten in Rust, leaving the rest of the product where it is.

Delivery

What you leave with

  • A service or tool with a defined failure model
  • A contract the TypeScript or desktop UI can call
  • Benchmarks or load notes for the path we were asked to make fast
  • A binary that builds in CI

Fit

Choose this when

  • A service has to be correct under concurrency, not just on the happy path.
  • Startup time, memory, or throughput is part of the user experience.
  • You want one core shared by a CLI, a server, and a desktop app.

Neighbors

When another practice fits better

These are the switches we recommend in scoping, not a disclaimer.

TypeScript

The work is product UI and ordinary request handling, where iteration speed matters more.

Tauri

The Rust core should ship as a desktop application.

APIs & platforms

The hard part is the contract with other systems, not the language of the worker.
